For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of dedicating one day each month to something that brings immense joy and meaning to my life—I create Volunteer Dog Photography for Monika’s Doggie Rescue. Combining my passion for photography with a deep love for dogs, this experience has allowed me to contribute to a cause that’s close to my heart while honing my skills as a photographer.

Why Monika’s Doggie Rescue?

Monika’s Doggie Rescue is more than just a shelter; it’s a place of hope and second chances for dogs who have faced some of the toughest situations. Many of these dogs have been abandoned, neglected, or mistreated, but thanks to the dedicated team at Monika’s, they’re given the care, attention, and love they deserve while waiting for their forever homes.

I chose Monika’s because their mission aligns with my belief in giving back to the community, especially when it comes to animals. Each time I walk through the doors, I see the dedication of the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of these dogs. I wanted to contribute in a way that could help these dogs get noticed, and photography turned out to be the perfect way to do that.

The Power of a Photo

As a professional dog photographer, I understand the importance of capturing the unique personality of each dog I work with. For rescue dogs, a great photograph can be a game-changer. Many potential adopters form their first impression of a dog through online profiles, and that’s where a compelling, heartwarming photo can make all the difference.

When I started volunteering, I made it my mission to capture each dog in a way that showcased their best qualities—whether it’s their playful energy, gentle nature, or soulful eyes. I spend time getting to know each dog before photographing them, allowing me to capture their true essence. Some dogs are shy at first, while others are full of energy, but each one has a story to tell through the lens.

Building Trust with the Dogs

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering at Monika’s is the connection I form with the dogs. Many of them come from traumatic backgrounds, so building trust is crucial. I take the time to create a calm and relaxed environment for them during our photo sessions, which helps to bring out their natural personalities.

It’s a humbling experience to see a timid dog slowly open up during a session, or to capture a moment of pure joy as they run around, tails wagging. These are the moments that I aim to share with the world, in hopes of connecting the right family with the right dog.

The Impact of Volunteering

Over the years, I’ve photographed hundreds of dogs at Monika’s Doggie Rescue. Some of my favorite moments include hearing that a dog I photographed was adopted shortly after their profile went live with their new photo. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that, in some small way, my photography helped a dog find a loving home.

I’ve also learned so much from this experience—about patience, compassion, and the resilience of these wonderful animals. Each dog has its own journey, and being part of their transition to a better life has been both humbling and inspiring.

Looking Forward

As I continue to volunteer with Monika’s Doggie Rescue, I’m excited to meet more dogs, tell their stories through my lens, and help them on their path to finding their forever families. Volunteering as a dog photographer has enriched my life in so many ways, and I hope to continue using my passion to make a difference, one photograph at a time.

If you’re considering volunteering or adopting, I highly encourage you to visit Monika’s Doggie Rescue https://doggierescue.com. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of knowing you’ve helped change a life, whether through giving your time or opening your heart and home to a dog in need.

Volunteering for Monika’s has become a part of who I am, and it’s something I look forward to every month. Each visit brings new challenges, new dogs, and new opportunities to make a difference through photography. And for that, I’m truly grateful.

What a wonderful organisation Monika’s is, and how lucky they -and their doggies - are to have you Kevin. Hundreds of photos taken means you’ve helped to rehome hundreds of dogs too given it’s a no kill shelter!
